Captain Name: Frano Gugic Nationality: Croatian Number of Crew: 5

The owner of ‘Carpe Diem 7”, an unquestionable professional, Captain Frano Gugic is not an ordinary man as you could say he is a genuine dreamer who manages successfully to follow his heart and passions in order to make happy his family, himself and of course people he works with. Captain Frano is 50 years of age. He was born on the island of Korcula, but grew up and attained BA in Science & Marine Engineering in Split. In the same city he met his future wife Lorena. After completing studies, Frano started to work for the international marine companies as an engineer. He got promoted to the highest position of the chief engineer aboard big ships at the age of only 27 years. Later on Frano decided it was time to grow further just in a bit different professional direction. He joined Caribbean cruise line as a sailor. After that he also worked aboard mega yacht for four years. Since Frano has always dreamt big, one of his goals was to have his own fleet just as his ancestors at native island used to do. After reaching professional top, Frano knew it was the right time to follow his heart, and together with his brother he bought a gulet. For the past eight years shoulder to shoulder with the brother Frano has successfully mastered a vessel similar to “Carpe Diem 7”. There’s no need to say that captain knows every single bay of Croatian coast, places full of history and important events, and of course breathtaking landscapes which are a must to visit. His favorite places to sail are a little cute town called Srkadin which is a step away from Krka National Park famous for its magnificent waterfalls, and the Kornati archipelago. Captain Frano enjoys planning with guests daily route. He always offers several options where and why it’s best to sail for the upcoming day. He has plenty of stories to tell about Croatian traditions, history and its people. It will be a true pleasure to sail with captain Frano and his dedicated family team as you’d feel yourself under the care of highly qualified professional and if to say in simple words a very good, kind hearted man. Besides the sea and gulets, Frano has passion to old cars. He owns few. Captain also has 2-star open water PADI diver certificate. His life time goal now to revive at his home town a tradition of building and owning gulets.

It would be unfair to state that Lorena Gugic only holds the position of stewardess aboard “Carpe Diem 7”. You could say that the yacht is literally like her second home. So she does everything what a woman would do in her shoes to make it not only look perfect but that it would favor guests with the warmest hospitality. Lorena was born in Croatian city of Split, where she finished gymnasium with the specialization in languages, that’s why she speaks fluent English and Italian, French and some German, and is willing to master Turkish one day. Lorena also holds BA in Economics. After getting married to Frano who back at that time was already making giant steps upwards his professional career, Lorena moved to Korcula, a home island of her husband. She opened a touristic agency in Racisce, but in three-year time she decided to dedicate her full time to the most important men in her life, Frano and two little precious boys, Niko and Petar. The guys seemed to show from the beginning that they were parents’ pride and were quite independent for their age, so Lorena could return to business. She joined the work at one of Korcula hotels. There she started to hone hospitality skills as if she knew that one-day welcoming and taking care of guests would become a big part of her life. When her husband and his brother bought a yacht, she started to help them around with the vessel. Frano taught Lorena everything he knew. So for the past eight years at the same time a fragile but persevering woman has been a deckhand, a bosun, a hostess and a chef. Right now when the boys took over the hard manly work and there is a new coming chef, Lorena can concentrate on what she loves the most – working closely with people. She says she loves her job because it’s never the same. “When you wake up you don’t know how it will end”, says Lorena. Meeting guests, serving, organizing the tour, also working with agents, paying bills is all part of daily interesting activities. Lorena’s also happy she’s surrounded by family and can see her boys who also love what they’re doing. When Lorena has time, she enjoys to stay close to the nature and take long walks, to master languages, read books and of course to travel.

Chef, Petor Krzelj is the only one aboard “Carpe Diem 7” who isn’t a part of the Gugics, though he feels just like a member of a family crew. Petor is 25 years of age. He was born in Split, and that was where he grew up and went to school. Whether he was inspired by his mother who directs a professional school for pastry, or Petor knew himself whom he’d want to become from the beginning, but right after his studies he joined a school for professional chefs to master his own kitchen one day. He’s a young ambitious professional who is ready to demonstrate passion to local traditional cuisine with a modern touch ad of course his own personal vision. You will see on your plate what can be described as a combination of respect towards traditions and modern ardent flavors. Petor has worked both on land, and aboard motor yachts. He had time to work at the restaurant on the island Brac and in his home town Split. What to say, Petor loves to cook Dalmatian cuisine. He masters the dishes which his ancestors has been coking for centuries with confidence and honor. His specialty is also a Mediterranean cuisine. He loves cooking fish and always controls that ingredients in his kitchen are the freshest ones. In his free time Petor still enjoys cooking, helping his family back at home, swimming, football and travelling. He is also a constant learner and likes to improve his skills.

Deckhand, Niko Gugic is the eldest of two brothers. He turns 19 in June this year and most probably will welcome his new year aboard “Carpe Diem 7”. Niko has just finished high school with sufficiently excellent grades, and now he’s ready to fully devote himself to a profession he’s been dreaming about since he learnt how to walk. He’ll work his third season as an independent deckhand. Later on Niko will go to college and study marine engineering to stay in family business. There is no single thing Niko doesn’t like about his job. He says it’s a big part of his personality and he knew he’d want to spend life working as a seaman. Even when Niko has free time, he goes spearfishing or diving. He also likes riding a motor bike around the beautiful island of Korcula or on the mainland. Niko speaks English very well and also knows German language.

Deckhand, Petar Gugic is the youngest son of captain Frano and his wife Lorena. You would think that he should be having his summer holiday fun with friends right now, as he’ only 17 years old, and still has one year to go with the high school. However, Petar is a young industrious gentleman who has a great passion for sea and already knows in which direction to go with his life. It is his second year as a deckhand. Last year he worked with his family on another family-owned gulet, honing his skills being always under careful and attentive supervision of his father. This year Petar is excited to welcome guests and perform his best on “Carpe Diem 7” which undergone a major refit to the highest standards. Petar also took part in preparing the yacht for summer season 2017 while still attending classes. At both activities he did a great job. Petar shares with us that this is a lifetime job for him as it’s very interesting and is an absolute family tradition. Not only his father, but his grandfather, uncle and some other relatives are also professional sailors. Petar loves boats, he is inspired when surrounded by the sea, wind, nature, wood and people. After he finishes high school, he’ll go to work on bigger ships and pursue a career of an engineer just like his father once did following his dream. Together with captain Frano Petar has also a big project which is to bring a small back to life, a very old and authentic one which is already going through refurbishment process. If Petar has free time from studies and his work, he enjoys fishing. His favorite place to fish on a small boat is outside of a native village back at Korcula island.
